Creating a YouTube channel from scratch takes less than ten minutes on an iPhone, and you do not need any special equipment beyond the phone itself. Whether you want to document a hobby, build an audience for a business, or just share videos with friends, here is how to set up your channel properly from the start.

Step 1: Sign In to YouTube with Your Google Account

  1. Open the YouTube app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your profile picture (or the person icon if you are not signed in) in the top right.
  3. Sign in with your Google account. If you do not have one, tap Create account and follow the steps to create a free Google account.

Your Google account automatically has a personal YouTube channel associated with it, but it needs to be activated before it is visible to others.

Step 2: Set Up Your Channel

  1. Tap your profile picture in the YouTube app.
  2. Tap Your channel.
  3. You will see a prompt to set up your channel with your name and a profile photo.
  4. Enter the name you want for your channel. This can be your personal name or a brand name.
  5. Add a profile photo by tapping the camera icon – use a photo from your iPhone’s camera roll or take a new one.
  6. Tap Create channel.

Step 3: Add a Channel Description and Links

  1. From your channel page, tap the Edit channel button (pencil icon).
  2. Add a description explaining what your channel is about. Keep it clear and include keywords that describe your content.
  3. You can also add links to your website or social media profiles.
  4. Tap Save.

Step 4: Add Channel Art (Banner Image)

A channel banner appears at the top of your channel page on desktop and tablet. You cannot add a banner from the YouTube mobile app directly – you need to use a mobile browser.

  1. Open Safari on your iPhone and go to youtube.com.
  2. Request the desktop site by tapping the AA icon in the address bar and selecting Request Desktop Website.
  3. Go to your channel and click Customize channel.
  4. Under Branding, add your banner image (recommended size: 2560 x 1440 pixels).

Alternatively, use a free tool like Canva, which has YouTube banner templates optimised for the correct dimensions.

Step 5: Upload Your First Video

  1. In the YouTube app, tap the + (Create) button at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select Upload a video.
  3. Choose a video from your camera roll.
  4. Add a title, description, and tags. Your title is the most important factor for discoverability.
  5. Set the visibility: Public (anyone can see it), Unlisted (only people with the link can see it), or Private (only you).
  6. Tap Upload.

Creating a Brand Account vs Personal Account

If you want a channel name different from your Google account name, or if you want to manage the channel with multiple Google accounts, create a Brand Account. Tap your profile picture, select Settings, then Add or manage your channels, then Create a channel. Enter your brand name and follow the prompts.
