Obama Presidential Center Public Opening
The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago opens to the general public on Juneteenth, June 19, 2026. The Obama Foundation said the date was chosen intentionally and symbolically to connect the history of Black freedom with the legacy of the first Black president.
Museum admission is free. The campus also includes a branch of the Chicago Public Library, basketball courts, an athletic center, and outdoor picnic areas, all open at no charge.
The June 18 opening ceremony featured Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bono, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, and former Presidents Biden, Bush, and Clinton. The public can now experience the center starting June 19.
Why Juneteenth Became a Federal Holiday
President Joe Biden signed Juneteenth National Independence Day into law on June 17, 2021. The legislation passed the Senate unanimously and the House by 415-14.
Despite being celebrated in Black communities for over 150 years, Juneteenth had long been overlooked at the federal level. The renewed national conversation about race following George Floyd’s death in 2020 accelerated the push for federal recognition.
Texas was the first state to officially recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday, doing so in 1980. It has been celebrated continuously in Galveston and Houston since 1866.
Events Across the Country
Major Juneteenth events are taking place across the United States on June 19. Chicago is hosting a particularly large celebration given the Obama Center opening. Houston, which has the longest-running Juneteenth tradition, is holding its annual parade and festival.
Brooklyn, New York, St. Louis, Camden, New Jersey, and cities across the country have announced parades, concerts, food festivals, readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, and community events.
