Chromebooks update automatically in the background while you are using them, but you can also manually check for and install updates if you want the latest version immediately. Updates take effect after a restart.

How Chrome OS Updates Work

Chrome OS downloads updates silently in the background without interrupting your work. Once a new version is downloaded, you will see a notification in the system tray saying ‘Update available – restart to update.’ The update does not install until you restart – you can continue using the Chromebook until you are ready.

How to Manually Check for Updates

  1. Click the time in the bottom right to open Quick Settings.
  2. Click the gear icon to open Settings.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the left sidebar and click About ChromeOS.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. If an update is available, it will begin downloading automatically.
  6. When the download is complete, click Restart to update.

Applying a Pending Update

If you see an update arrow in the system tray (a circular arrow icon):

  1. Click the time to open Quick Settings.
  2. Click the update arrow icon.
  3. Click Restart to update. The Chromebook restarts and the update installs. This usually takes 2-4 minutes.

What Gets Updated

  • Chrome OS operating system and security patches.
  • The Chrome browser (updates together with Chrome OS).
  • System apps (Camera, Files, Gallery, etc.).

Android apps update separately through the Google Play Store. Linux apps do not update automatically – you need to update them manually using terminal commands (sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade).

Checking Your Current Chrome OS Version

Go to Settings, then About ChromeOS. Your current version number is displayed here. You can also type chrome://version in the browser address bar to see the full version details.

Update Channels

Chromebooks default to the Stable channel, which receives thoroughly tested updates. Advanced users can switch to Beta (more frequent updates with some rough edges) or Dev (bleeding-edge, may have bugs) channels:

  1. Go to Settings, then About ChromeOS.
  2. Click Additional details.
  3. Click Change channel and select your preferred channel.

Switching from Stable to a less stable channel may Powerwash the device.

End of Support Dates

Each Chromebook model has an Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date after which it no longer receives Chrome OS updates. You can check your model’s AUE date at google.com/intl/en/chromebook/auto-update-policy. After this date, the Chromebook still works but no longer receives security updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Chromebook not receiving updates?

If your Chromebook has reached its AUE date, it will no longer receive updates. Otherwise, check that you have a Wi-Fi connection, sufficient storage space (low storage can prevent updates), and that your Chromebook is not managed by an organisation that controls update timing.

Do I need to restart immediately after an update downloads?

No. The update installs on the next restart whenever you are ready. You can continue using the Chromebook with the current version until you choose to restart.
