Your Instagram Posts Can Now Rank on Google: Here’s How to Take Advantage

For years, there was a wall between Instagram and the rest of the internet. You could pour hours into a post, and none of it would ever show up when someone searched the same topic on Google. That wall is gone.

What Changed

Two things happened. First, public Instagram posts from professional accounts can now be indexed by Google, meaning your Reels and photos can appear in actual search results.

Second, Google launched platform properties, a new property type in Google Search Console that lets you connect your Instagram account and see exactly which search terms bring people to your posts, along with clicks and impressions. Best part? You don’t need a website. If your entire online presence is one Instagram account, you can still verify it and get full search data.

Why It Matters

Instagram reach has always depended on the algorithm choosing to show you to people. Google traffic is different: someone typing a question into a search bar is actively looking for an answer, which makes them far more likely to follow you or buy from you.

There’s also the shelf life. An Instagram post fades in a day or two. A post that ranks on Google can pull in visitors for months. And since the feature is brand new, almost nobody is optimizing for it yet.

How to Set It Up

Open Search Console, click Add Property, select Instagram, and authorize the connection. No technical steps, no code. Data takes a few days to appear, and the rollout is gradual, so check back if you don’t see the option yet.

How to Get Your Posts Ranking

  • Write captions like mini articles. Use the words people actually type into Google. If your Reel shows budget travel tips for Bali, say exactly that.
  • Fill in alt text. It’s in advanced settings when posting. Most people skip it, and Google reads it.
  • Answer questions. Posts built around “how to,” “what costs,” and “which is better” match real searches.
  • Check your settings. Make sure your account is eligible to appear in search engines. The Instagram Help Center shows where to look.
  • Follow the data. Once queries show up in Search Console, make more content on whatever is already ranking.

Bottom Line

Instagram content is no longer trapped inside Instagram. It’s part of the open web, and it’s measurable. Six months from now, everyone will be talking about Instagram SEO. Right now, you can still get there first.
