The iPhone 18 Pro Max and the iPhone 17 Pro Max are the same size, the same thickness and carry the same display.
Apple changed four things that matter: the main camera aperture, the chip, the cooling and the battery. Weight went up too.
Every number below is taken from Apple’s own specification sheets for both phones, not from pre-launch reporting.

Seventeen of those 28 rows are identical. That is the honest summary of this generation before we get into what actually improved.
Variable Aperture Is the Real Camera Change

This is the first iPhone with a mechanically adjustable aperture. Every previous model had a fixed opening on the main lens.
Six laser-cut blades sit behind the main camera, driven by a rotor mechanism that moves them between four positions.
- f/1.48: the widest setting, for low light and shallow depth of field
- f/1.8: a general-purpose middle setting
- f/2.8: more of the frame in focus
- f/4.0: the narrowest, for maximum sharpness front to back
The 17 Pro Max is locked at f/1.78 on its main camera. It gets shallow depth of field but cannot choose otherwise.
That matters for two reasons. Wide open at f/1.48 the new sensor gathers more light than any previous iPhone main camera.
Stopped down to f/4.0, background blur comes from the optics rather than software estimation of what should be blurred.
Apple also added a new computational imaging pipeline and expanded Photographic Styles with texture and grain controls.
A separate feature called Apple Reference Image is opt-in. It uses signed sensor data to create an unalterable original.
That reference sits alongside your edits in Photos, processed through Private Cloud Compute. It is aimed at provenance rather than image quality.
The other two rear lenses did not change at all. Both phones carry the same 48MP ultra wide and the same 48MP 4x telephoto.
A20 Pro vs A19 Pro: Chip and Sustained Performance

The A20 Pro moves to a 2-nanometer process. The A19 Pro in the 17 Pro Max is built on a 3-nanometer node.
Core counts barely move. Both have a 6-core CPU, and the GPU goes from six cores to seven.
Apple quotes that 7-core GPU as up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro, with 50 percent more memory bandwidth.
The AI hardware is where the gap widens. A dual 16-core Neural Engine gives 32 cores and double the processing of the A19 Pro.
Sustained performance is the more useful claim. A redesigned vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the previous generation.
Apple rates that as up to a 40 percent gain in sustained performance, which is about how long the phone holds peak speed.
For gaming or long video exports that thermal headroom matters more than a benchmark run that lasts thirty seconds.
Connectivity changed too. The 18 Pro Max uses Apple’s C2 cellular modem and adds mmWave support in the United States.
Wireless is unchanged. Both phones use the N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, and both are dual eSIM only.
Battery Life: 45 Hours Against 39 Hours

Apple rates the 18 Pro Max at up to 45 hours of video playback. The 17 Pro Max is rated at up to 39 hours.
That six-hour gain is the largest battery increase Apple has claimed for an iPhone generation.
Apple also quotes up to 30 hours of typical usage on a full charge, and about 7 hours of video from a five-minute charge.
Charging speed improved as well, though the comparison needs care because the two use different adapters.
- iPhone 17 Pro Max: 50 percent in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: 50 percent in about 15 minutes with a 60W adapter
- iPhone 18 Pro Max wireless: 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 35W MagSafe charger
The faster figure needs a higher-wattage adapter, and Apple does not include a power adapter with either phone.
Battery capacity degrades with charge cycles on both, which is worth watching using the iPhone cycle count check.
Identical Dimensions, 16 Grams Heavier

Several pre-launch reports said the 18 Pro Max would be thicker. Apple’s published dimensions say otherwise.
Both phones measure 163.4mm tall, 78.0mm wide and 8.75mm deep. Those are the same numbers to a tenth of a millimeter.
Weight is the one physical difference. The 17 Pro Max is 233 grams and the 18 Pro Max is 249 grams.
Sixteen grams inside an unchanged shell points at a denser battery, which fits the six-hour runtime gain.
Materials carry over exactly: an aluminum unibody, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back.
Durability is unchanged at IP68, tested to six meters for 30 minutes. Cases from one generation may not fit the other.
The Dynamic Island was redesigned to show three Live Activities at once, while keeping Face ID working as before.
Colors are completely different. The 17 Pro Max came in silver, cosmic orange and deep blue.
The 18 Pro Max replaces those with black, silver, glacier and burgundy, adding a fourth finish to the range.
What Did Not Change Between the Two

This is the section most comparisons skip, and it is the one that decides whether an upgrade makes sense.
- Display: same 6.9-inch panel, same resolution, same 120Hz ProMotion, same brightness
- Ultra wide camera: same 48MP sensor at 13mm and f/2.2
- Telephoto camera: same 48MP sensor at 100mm, 4x, f/2.8
- Front camera: same 18MP Center Stage sensor at f/1.9
- Video: 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps on both
- Chassis: identical height, width and depth
- Storage: 256GB to 2TB on both, with no 128GB tier
- Durability and wireless: IP68, N1 chip, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, dual eSIM
If you photograph mostly at the ultra wide or telephoto end, this generation gives you almost nothing new.
If you shoot on the main camera, the aperture change is the single biggest camera hardware shift in several years.
Price, Storage and Trade-In

The 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 for 256GB. The 17 Pro Max launched a year earlier at $1,199 for the same capacity.
That is a $100 increase at the entry point. Storage tiers are otherwise identical, running 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.
Apple lists monthly financing at $54.12 over 24 months, or a lease through Apple Upgrade starting at $34.99 a month.
Apple Trade In credit runs from $175 to $885 for an iPhone 13 or later. Carrier deals go higher, up to $1,200.
Pre-orders opened Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific, with the phone on sale Friday, September 18.
The first wave covers more than 65 countries and regions, with 20 more added on Friday, September 25.
Accessories are priced separately, including a $49 clear case, a $59 TechWoven case and a $59 crossbody strap.
Should You Upgrade From the 17 Pro Max

For a 17 Pro Max owner this is a weak upgrade. The screen, the chassis and two of the three rear cameras are unchanged.
- Upgrade if: you shoot main-camera photos constantly and want real aperture control
- Upgrade if: six extra hours of video playback solves a genuine problem
- Upgrade if: you run sustained heavy workloads and want the larger vapor chamber
- Skip it if: you mostly use the telephoto or ultra wide lens
- Skip it if: you want a lighter phone, since this one gained 16 grams
Anyone on an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older is looking at a far bigger jump across every category, not just these four.
Full sheets are published on Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specs page and the iPhone 17 Pro Max tech specs.
Apple’s own framing of the launch sits in the iPhone 18 Pro announcement if you want the marketing version.
