Amazon reported Q1 2026 revenue of $187.6 billion, up 12 percent year-over-year, with AWS cloud revenue of $33.7 billion growing 19 percent and reaching an annual run rate above $130 billion for the first time.

Operating income reached $21.8 billion in Q1, more than doubling the $10.7 billion reported in Q1 2024, as efficiency gains in the retail fulfillment network combined with high-margin AWS and advertising revenue growth.

CEO Andy Jassy said AI demand is driving AWS growth faster than server capacity can be added, and that Amazon is investing $20 billion in data center infrastructure in 2026 to close the supply gap.

AWS AI Demand and Capacity

AWS revenue growth of 19 percent in Q1 2026 was the highest quarterly rate since Q2 2022. Jassy attributed the acceleration to enterprises moving AI workloads to the cloud after internal infrastructure deployments proved difficult to scale.

Amazon Bedrock, which provides access to third-party foundation models including Anthropic’s Claude, saw usage grow 300 percent year-over-year in Q1. Jassy said Bedrock is now used by more than 40,000 companies.

The $20 billion 2026 capex commitment for data centers is a 43 percent increase over 2025 spending. Amazon is building new data center campuses in Virginia, Ohio, Texas, Singapore, and Dublin to expand AI compute capacity.

Retail and Advertising

Amazon’s advertising business generated $14.8 billion in Q1 2026, up 24 percent year-over-year. Advertising is now Amazon’s fastest-growing major segment and carries operating margins that management has described as “very high” without giving specific figures.

Same-day delivery, now available in 60 US markets, drove a 14 percent increase in Prime member purchase frequency in those markets compared to markets with standard two-day delivery. Amazon said it will expand same-day to 80 markets by end of 2026.
